Darwin Leuba has served as the Auditor of O’Hara Township since first elected in 2017. A second-generation Taiwanese-American (安達文), he graduated from Fox Chapel Area High School before earning a degree in Computer Science from Yale University. Darwin has used his data background and programming skills to increase transparency and accountability for the people of O’Hara Township and Allegheny County, protect the right to vote across the nation, and increase our community’s quality of life.

He spearheaded the 2018 effort with Councilwoman Anita Prizio to curtail unconstitutional strip searches of sexual assault victims within our jail, and he strategized the plan that resulted in Allegheny County’s LGBTQIA+ conversion therapy ban ordinance.

After the 2020 Black Lives Matter protests, he collaborated with pro bono attorneys and organized a grassroots cell phone footage library to prove the innocence of peaceful protestors and bystanders who were charged with crimes they clearly did not commit.

He also worked with Board of Elections Member Bethany Hallam and hosted weekly Zoom meetings to update constituents on the 2020 election process, answer inquiries, and make sure that voters received their ballots in time to vote.

He has organized support for paid sick leave, fair workweek legislation, and has managed many campaign teams for local progressive candidates and causes.

Darwin frequently appeals Allegheny County and the current Controller’s unlawful decisions to conceal documents from taxpayers, and he has won over a dozen appeals in the Pennsylvania Office of Open Records related to public subsidies and incompetent jail operations. In fact, Darwin was the first to apply Pennsylvania’s Right to Know Law successfully to require the County to release part of its Amazon bid, which was later revealed to be a 6.7 billion dollar giveaway.

Most recently, as a dues-paying Teamster (Local 238) employed by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, he was assigned to serve as the 2022 Voter Protection Director for the Alaska Democratic Party, making sure every eligible Alaskan’s vote counted in the key Congressional race where Mary Peltola defeated Sarah Palin.

Darwin also serves as Vice-Chair of the O’Hara Democratic Committee, and frequently volunteers for campaigns and committees to strengthen the Allegheny County Democratic party. In his free time, he bakes cookies, reads county contracts, and builds legos with his little sister Mafi.

Darwin is running for Allegheny County Controller because our government needs both his insight and his oversight. As an Auditor, as a Teamster, and as a Democratic organizer, Darwin has demonstrated his commitment to making our County government work better for working people.
